CloudDC is trusted by thousands of users daily to provide the speed and reliability that their applications demand. How is our technology different? We have adopted a design commonly found in scale out High Performance Computing (HPC) super-computer clusters and added the enterprise reliabily to host your mission critical applications. 

OrionVM leverages a scale out architecture for compute, memory and storage resources. Our distributed cluster delivers horizontal scalability, enterprise resiliency and high performance. 

Architecture

Many Cloud Computing platforms are criticised for their limited storage performance and high latency on storage requests. This issue is caused by the use of centralised network backed storage devices. By centralising storage, not only are you causing contention on limited resources, you also create a single point of failure. 

OrionVM's CloudDC platform has been built from the ground up to address this problem. We utilise a completely distributed storage system that scales with the size of the cluster. We leverage a high speed Infiniband fabric to allow for the high speed replication of storage. 

Infiniband is heavily utilised in super-computer and high performance computing systems where high throughput and extremely low latency is required. Each server in our cluster is connected by 80gb/s of connectivity to allow for high speed storage replication and access. 

The design goals for our platform are:

  • Build a highly resiliant and self-healing architecture. 
  • Deliver a no single point of failure design. 
  • No centralised bottlenecks. All cluster nodes must be homogeneous and grow all tiers of resources (CPU, Memory and Storage) with each server added. 
  • Deliver a 'Virtual Datacentre' to our users, including dedicated server performance and layer 2 private networks. 

Hardware

We utilise enterprise grade hardware from Dell, SuperMicro, Mellanox and Cisco. OrionVM ensures that we have N+1 redundancy on all server, storage and network assets to allow us to withstand a hardware failure.

Software

OrionVM has developed a custom software stack that powers CloudDC. We heavily leverage the Xen Source hypervisor, and many other Open Source applications. The OrionVM Cloud Orchestration and storage systems have been written in-house by our team of engineers. Our software is at the heart of our architecture allowing us to deliver the high performance and resiliant architecture you demand.  

Network

OrionVM has peered with several high quality transit providers to ensure you the best network access, both to Australian and International peers. OrionVM has invested in buying high quality transit from leading providers in Australia (including Vocus, Equinix and AAPT). We also have peering with many other Australian ISPs and content providers. 

We ensure that we have plenty of available capacity on the network to give you the lowest latency possible.
